Within hours of receiving news of the tsunami in the Indian ocean, World Accord donors began phoning and emailing contributions to help relieve the suffering from one of the most severe natural disasters the world has ever seen. Although World Accord did not have an active project in Sri Lanka at that time, we immediately contacted the Sri Lanka Centre for Development Facilitation (SLCDF), a partner from a prior project in Sri Lanka, to see if they could channel World Accord's tsunami relief contributions to the places where it was needed.
Within a couple of days, World Accord sent a total of $54,000, which was the very first donation the Sri Lanka Centre for Development Facilitation received. Much more needed to be done and project proposals kept coming into the office. In partnership with the Community of Christ World Hunger Fund, World Accord donors sent an additional $192,000 to help in the relief effort. The funds are being used to help people in coastal regions rebuild their homes, their means of earning a living, and their lives.
It is important to note that sending disaster relief funds is not part of World Accord's mandate. However, when natural catastrophes effect countries in which we have project partners that we know and trust, we are quick to respond with whatever form of development assistance we have available.
