The struggle between the Sinhalese majority and Tamil separatists broke into war in 1983. Tens of thousands have died in the ethnic conflict that continues in the nation today.
On December 26, 2004, tsunamis swept across the Indian Ocean, causing devastation in Sri Lanka and surrounding areas. People were left without homes, jobs, infrastructure, security or families. This catastrophe brought our global community together – recognizing our interconnectedness and mutual vulnerabilities by raising awareness and aid for the victims.
