Philippines
The Republic of the Philippines is made up of an archipelago of 7,100 islands, approximately 1,000 of which are populated. The geographic region is marked by active volcanoes, frequent typhoons, and daily tremors and earthquakes. It stands as the 12th most populated country in the world, half of which is involved in agriculture. Approximately 40% of its population lives below the poverty line.
The plight of the poor in the Philippines can be attributed to a variety of factors. The overall decline in national growth, an overwhelming national debt, and strict fiscal restrictions have led to the deterioration of public services. Corruption and extremely unequal income distribution has helped to entrench the class divide. The rural poor suffer from a lack of access to investments and credit, and lack opportunity to improve or learn new skills.
